Sense of Self, simply put, is your perception of yourself. Sometimes our self-image is not aligned with how others see us. When I mentor others, I encourage them to always work on developing personally and professionally. The world around you changes constantly, and those changes can impact how we respond. I’ve seen some fall into a pattern of negativity because our ever changing world forces them to embrace change, or be left behind.

When assessing your self-image, always have that truth teller in your life who can give you constructive feedback on how you appear to others. A few years ago, a gentleman I know had fallen into this negativity pattern, and everyone that had to deal with him talked behind his back about how rude and hateful he had become. Thankfully, he had a trusted truth teller in his life that discussed this with him. When he made a conscious effort to be pleasant and engage in a positive manner with others, regardless of the circumstances, he gained friends and his co-workers began trusting him again and he admitted being a much happier person. His effort had a satisfying payoff.

Human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them, but … life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves.”
