As a contract negotiator, I run across the gamut of personalities with our suppliers. Most are really great to work with, staying focused on resolving any conflicts with contract language. However, sometimes I end up negotiating with a personality focused on getting their way. Those personalities use various techniques to try to shake my confidence and get me to fold. Most recently, I had a supplier attorney use sarcasm and twisting my words. To one who doesn’t recognize this personality style, such a tactic can easily turn into an argument, but I just ignored him and moved on, not taking the bait.

This type of situation happens a lot in personal relationships and interactions, often escalating into full blown arguments, hurt feelings and even drama exploited on social media. Learn to recognize when someone is trying to pick a fight with you for the purpose of invalidating your position on a subject.
